What is the purpose of the Pensions Verification Exercise?
The purpose of the verification exercise is to ensure pension payments are directed to the rightful recipients. It helps confirm the identity of pensioners, updates records, and resolves discrepancies, which in turn streamlines the pension management process.
When does the verification exercise start and end?
The verification process will run from Friday, April 4th, 2025, to Friday, April 15th, 2025. This is part of a 30-day pension verification exercise that will include administrative support.
Who is eligible for the verification?
This exercise is open to three groups of pensioners:
- Mainstream Pensioners (State Government retirees)
- AKSUBEB Pensioners (Retirees from the Akwa Ibom State Universal Basic Education Board)
- Local Government Pensioners (Retirees from Local Government areas)
How many pensioners are expected to be verified?
A total of 28,898 pensioners are expected to take part. These include:
- 16,477 Mainstream Pensioners
- 7,880 AKSUBEB Pensioners
- 4,541 Local Government Pensioners
What are the verification options available?
Pensioners have two options for verification:
- Walk-in Verification Centre: Visit a designated verification centre based on the provided schedule.
- Self-Verification (Online): Complete the process from your home via the portal.
What are the requirements for verification?
To complete the verification, pensioners need to provide the following:
- A Pensioner ID Card
- A Valid BVN (Bank Verification Number)
- Physical presence for Walk-in Verification (if opting for in-person verification)
How does the Walk-in Verification work?
If you choose the walk-in verification option, the process will follow these steps:
- Visit the designated verification centre.
- Provide your pensioner details.
- Verify your identity through the system.
- Complete a digital identity check.
- Your pensioner ID card will be scanned.
- Once verified, you will receive a verification slip.
How can I complete Self-Verification online?
For pensioners who have their phone numbers registered on the portal, self-verification can be done by following these steps:
- Go to the website: pensioners.akwaibomstate.gov.ng.
- Click on “Verify”.
- Enter your Pension Number and Phone Number.
- You will receive an OTP (One-Time Password) via SMS. Enter it on the portal.
- Perform a digital identity check.
- Upload a photo of your Pensioner ID Card.
- After verification, you can view and print your Verification Slip.
What information is being verified?
The verification process will check:
- Personal Identification Details
- Bank Verification Number (BVN): The BVN must match the pensioner’s name exactly, though minor name variations (like swapping first and last names) are allowed.
- Name Accuracy: Ensure that your name is correctly recorded.
Where and when will the Walk-in Verification take place?
Walk-in verification will be available at the Sub-Treasury and Bank. The exact schedule and locations will be shared with pensioners.
Will there be any support available at the verification centres?
Yes. Each verification centre will have:
- Verification Agents to assist pensioners.
- Committee Members to oversee and provide feedback.
- Medical Support: The Ministry of Health will have an ambulance and a nurse available for any emergencies.

What happens after successful verification?

If your phone number isn’t registered, you will need to visit a Walk-in Verification Centre to complete your verification in person.
Can someone else verify on my behalf?
No, the verification must be completed by the pensioner in person or through the online portal (if eligible). No third parties can complete the process for you.
