SUBEB Clarifies Benue Teacher Recruitment Details

·

The Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has addressed public concerns and clarified issues surrounding the recently concluded teacher recruitment exercise. This statement aims to ensure transparency and inform the public about key decisions made during the process.

The Board set varying cut-off marks for applicants based on their qualifications, reflecting its expectations for academic performance. The thresholds were as follows:

  • Degree holders (B.Ed.) – 50%
  • NCE holders – 45%
  • BSc, B.A English, and Science-related courses – 25%

SUBEB prioritised the recruitment of Science and Mathematics teachers to address the acute shortage of qualified personnel in these critical areas. This decision aims to strengthen the teaching of foundational subjects in primary schools.

Eligibility for CBT Participation

SUBEB clarified that only applicants with specific qualifications were allowed to sit for the Computer-Based Test (CBT). Eligible qualifications included:

  • NCE
  • B.Ed.
  • B.A English
  • BSc Mathematics and pure Science courses (e.g., Physics, Chemistry)

Graduates of pure Science disciplines were selected to teach Basic Science subjects in primary schools, ensuring a strong foundation for Science education. Applicants with other qualifications were screened out to focus on the state’s most pressing educational needs.

Emphasis on Science and Mathematics Education

The Board reiterated its commitment to reversing the decline in student enrolment and performance in Science-related subjects. By prioritising Science and Mathematics teachers, SUBEB aims to build a robust foundation for future education at the primary level.

NCE Cut-Off Mark Justification

The cut-off mark for NCE holders was set at 45%, recognising their role in providing continuity and stability in foundational education. This decision is intended to support long-term teaching excellence in primary schools.

PTA Teachers and Recruitment Guidelines

SUBEB dismissed rumours of automatic absorption of PTA teachers into the recruitment process. Like all applicants, PTA teachers were required to take and pass the CBT to qualify. The Board issued a memo advising Education Secretaries to caution PTA teachers against relying on misinformation and emphasised adherence to recruitment guidelines.

Final Message to the Public

The general public is urged to disregard baseless rumours and refrain from spreading negative comments. SUBEB remains dedicated to providing quality basic education across Benue State.
