TRCN Registration and PQE Application

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is a regulatory body that focuses on the professional development and registration of qualified teachers in Nigeria. Teachers who want to take the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) must complete registration forms available at State offices nationwide. The PQE is NECESSARY for securing a teaching job in Nigeria.

The TRCN certificate is obtained once in a lifetime and must be renewed every three years, similar to other professions.

Requirements for TRCN Registration 2024

Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications and will be registered under the appropriate category based on their academic background:

Category Qualification
Category A Ph.D. in Education or Ph.D. with Education qualification
Category B Master’s in Education or Master’s in other fields with Education qualification
Category C Degree in Education or Degree in other fields with Education qualification
Category D NCE
  • School certificate/statement of result
  • Valid NIN
  • Birth certificate or Age Declaration certificate
  • A recent passport photograph

Candidates whose degrees are NOT in Education will require a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE, PDDE, or PDE) certificate for their registration.

A teacher who obtains a higher qualification can upgrade their membership grade (e.g., from Category B to A) by visiting the TRCN office to complete an upgrading form. The teacher will also pay the difference in the registration fee between the old and new grades.

How to Apply for TRCN in 2024

Teachers who wish to take the PQE must complete the registration forms available at State TRCN offices nationwide. The completed forms should be returned with proof of payment for the examination fees, which depends on their Category.

Successful PQE candidates must visit a TRCN office with their payment teller to receive a cash receipt and complete their TRCN registration. The fee by Category is as follows:

  • Ph.D.: N8,000
  • Master’s: N7,000
  • Bachelor’s: N6,000
  • NCE: N5,000

After registration, teachers can check their status online by visiting TRCN’s official site at http://tis.trcn.gov.ng and selecting “Check a Teacher’s Registration Status Online”.

Teachers must renew their license every three years, provided they have paid their annual dues for each of those three years. Teachers caught forging registration documents or convicted of criminal offenses, either by the Council or Law Court will be deregistered by the Council.
