The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has announced the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to Nigerians at a subsidised price. Only people with National Identification Numbers (NIN) will be eligible to buy the 50kg rice at 40,000 naira. The price of the 50kg bag of rice is set at a flat rate of N40,000, which is expected to reduce the burden of the ongoing food crisis in the country.
This intervention is timely and necessary, considering the current challenges many Nigerians are facing. It is part of the government’s efforts to ease the high cost of accessing food, especially for vulnerable groups.

The current administration has also released 42,000 metric tonnes of Assorted Food Commodities (AFC) for distribution to the most vulnerable citizens. The rice subsidy is another step in that direction for offering relief to Nigerians in 2024.
The government has promised that the process of buying the rice has been designed to ensure FAIRNESS. Each person is limited to one bag of 50kg rice, and the system will verify the identities of applicants through the NIN and phone numbers. This will prevent people from buying multiple bags.

To purchase the Federal Government’s subsidised rice, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Have National Identification Number (NIN)
- One person can only buy one bag
- Civil servants must be enrolled in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS)
- Valid phone number
How to Apply for Federal Government N40,000 Rice in 2024
Citizens interested in this initiative can buy the rice at designated points of sale. Civil servants will need their IPPIS details to access the rice grains. Interested staff members are to complete a Google form on the OHCSF website at https://www.ohcsf.gov.ng and submit it to the director of human resources for endorsement.
Buyers MUST provide their NIN and phone number. Public servants should also use their IPPIS details.
At the designated sale point, the NIN is logged into the system, and a code number is generated. A treasury receipt will also be produced that shows the time and location for collection for each applicant.
Buyers will then proceed to the collection centre, where they will present their code and receipt to officials. After verification, they will be handed a 50kg bag of rice.
