10 US Universities That Accept NECO

As a Nigerian, you will greatly welcome offers to study in the US. But sometimes, your type of result can be a problem. Generally, WASSCE is recognized in the US but NECO (National Examination Council) is sometimes not accepted by some universities and colleges. So, we will clear the air right now and look at the US universities that accept NECO. This article will show you which US universities recognize the NECO for admission. If you have NECO results and want to study in the US, this is for you.

Is NECO Accepted by American Universities?

In the USA, some colleges and universities accept NECO results. WAEC results, on the other hand, are more broadly accepted across various institutions. So, yes, the US recognizes NECO if that’s what you have. You just need to look out for those that specifically mention NECO on their admission application page. Also, the problem is that your preferred university may not accept NECO, so you may have to compromise your decision.

US Universities that Accept NECO

As I mentioned earlier, not all universities accept NECO. This is understandable because NECO is really a Nigerian thing, unlike WAEC which is a West African thing, and generally gains the most publicity. This is not to say that NECO is average or whatever. No, NECO is equally valuable and many US universities will accept your NECO result. Let’s get in and see some of these US universities that accept NECO.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Gaining admission to MIT is quite tough and competitive. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is known for its rigorous and prestigious programs, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math. The university looks for Nigerian students who demonstrate outstanding academic abilities and potential.

Regarding the NECO result, it’s not explicitly stated whether MIT accepts NECO scores as a part of its entry requirements. NECO is an examination body in Nigeria responsible for conducting exams such as the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for secondary school admission and the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for college and university admission.

If you are a Nigerian student with NECO examinations under your belt, you might need to provide official transcripts, test scores, and other documentation to showcase your academic prowess and qualifications.

2. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

Caltech, short for the California Institute of Technology, is a renowned private research university in Pasadena, California.

According to Caltech’s admissions website, applicants are required to take standardized tests like the SAT or ACT. The website does not mention whether NECO scores are considered an acceptable form of admission test. Also, Caltech’s admissions process evaluates multiple factors such as academic grades, extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation. Therefore, even if NECO results were accepted, they would not be the sole criterion for admission. It’s always advisable to verify on your own with the specific university or college to ensure they accept NECO.

3. Stanford University

Stanford University ranks among the top universities to study at. However, it’s certain they are among the US universities that accept NECO.

This university is renowned for its challenging admission process, excellent academic programs, and focus on student development. Yet, it remains clear that Stanford University recognizes NECO as a valid high school qualification.

NECO is an examination board in Nigeria responsible for issuing high school diplomas to students. While NECO is prominent in Nigeria, its recognition is less clear internationally. A review of Stanford University’s website and various admission standards does not explicitly indicate NECO as an accepted form of high school certification. This doesn’t necessarily mean Stanford doesn’t accept NECO, but rather that this information isn’t prominently displayed on the university’s website.

4. Harvard University

A globally recognized institution, Harvard University, unfortunately, does recognize NECO as a valid entry qualification. In the US, colleges often use standardized tests like the SAT or ACT to determine admissions. Harvard requires applicants to take either the SAT or ACT. Besides these tests, Harvard also evaluates academic records, essays, participation in extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation.

For international students, proving English proficiency is essential, usually through tests like TOEFL or IELTS. They should also have a strong academic background, with transcripts from previous schools, which might need translation into English.

5. Columbia University

This is a prestigious Ivy League institution in New York City. Columbia University is known for its highly selective admissions. They seek the most talented and brightest students from around the globe.

Regarding the acceptance of NECO results, there isn’t any specific information or official statement on Columbia University’s website or through other official sources. In the United States, colleges often require more globally recognized exams like the International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) instead of NECO scores.

To confirm whether Columbia University accepts NECO scores, I contacted their admissions office directly but they weren’t clear about it, neither did they dismiss the validity of NECO. I also recommend that you consider taking IB or AP exams to enhance your university application prospects for Columbia University.

6. Duke University

At number 6, we have Duke University in the US, located in Durham, North Carolina. Duke University is a prestigious private research university known for its selective admissions process. Duke evaluates various factors for admission, including academic transcripts, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, and essays.

When it comes to NECO results, Duke University’s official website, and other credible sources regarding their acceptance of NECO results for admission are not specific. NECO is an examination board in Nigeria responsible for conducting high school examinations, so yes Duke University understands that it’s a valid certificate for admission.

To get specific information, I recommend you do what I did, which is to contact Duke University directly. You can reach out to the Duke University Undergraduate Admissions Office for details about their admission process and whether NECO result is considered.

7. University of California, Berkeley

The University of California, Berkeley may or may not accept NECO. As a highly selective public university in the United States, UC Berkeley maintains stringent admission criteria, and it is not confirmed if NECO results are acknowledged as a valid form of secondary school certification.

Applicants to UC Berkeley are required to have completed high school or an equivalent qualification. The university recognizes standard high school diplomas and the General Educational Development (GED) certificate. However, NECO scores are not listed among the accepted qualifications.

8. Yale University

At number 8, I checked into Yale University regarding this NECO topic. Known for its high academic standards and selective admissions, Yale University, a prestigious Ivy League institution in New Haven, Connecticut, is among the US universities that accept NECO result.

Also, to apply to Yale, you need to submit your SAT or ACT scores along with your high school transcripts. In addition, Yale requires at least two teacher evaluations, a school report, and a mid-year school report, alongside other standard application materials.

9. Princeton University

I did check the Princeton University website myself. This school is located in Princeton, New Jersey, and is a member of the Ivy League, Princeton University. Yes, Princeton University does accept NECO scores for admission. In fact, this university is more interested in SAT scores, two teacher recommendations, counselor recommendations, and school reports (SR).

International students need to take either the ACT or the SAT, along with two SAT Subject Tests (or just one SAT Subject Test if the student is taking the ACT with Writing). It’s always my recommendation for you to check directly with each university for their specific admission requirements.

Applicants to Princeton University are also required to submit official high school documents and scores from any external exams they have taken, like the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO

10. University of Chicago

The University of Chicago doesn’t solely rely on NECO scores for admissions decisions. Applicants are typically required to submit either ACT or SAT scores as part of the application process.

Admission to the university is based on multiple factors, including academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and personal essays.

Although NECO scores are not directly accepted, candidates who have taken NECO exams can still apply and be considered for admission. In such cases, the university may review other forms of academic achievement evidence, such as transcripts from previous schools and performance in rigorous high school courses. Candidates are also encouraged to take the ACT or SAT to demonstrate college readiness.
