No, NECO is equally valuable and many US universities will accept your NECO result. Let’s get in and see some of these US universities that accept NECO.
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Gaining admission to MIT is quite tough and competitive. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is known for its rigorous and prestigious programs, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math. The university looks for Nigerian students who demonstrate outstanding academic abilities and potential.
Regarding the NECO result, it’s not explicitly stated whether MIT accepts NECO scores as a part of its entry requirements. NECO is an examination body in Nigeria responsible for conducting exams such as the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for secondary school admission and the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for college and university admission.

At number 6, we have Duke University in the US, located in Durham, North Carolina. Duke University is a prestigious private research university known for its selective admissions process. Duke evaluates various factors for admission, including academic transcripts, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, and essays.
When it comes to NECO results, Duke University’s official website, and other credible sources regarding their acceptance of NECO results for admission are not specific. NECO is an examination board in Nigeria responsible for conducting high school examinations, so yes Duke University understands that it’s a valid certificate for admission.
To get specific information, I recommend you do what I did, which is to contact Duke University directly. You can reach out to the Duke University Undergraduate Admissions Office for details about their admission process and whether NECO result is considered.
7. University of California, Berkeley
The University of California, Berkeley may or may not accept NECO. As a highly selective public university in the United States, UC Berkeley maintains stringent admission criteria, and it is not confirmed if NECO results are acknowledged as a valid form of secondary school certification.
Applicants to UC Berkeley are required to have completed high school or an equivalent qualification. The university recognizes standard high school diplomas and the General Educational Development (GED) certificate. However, NECO scores are not listed among the accepted qualifications.
8. Yale University
At number 8, I checked into Yale University regarding this NECO topic. Known for its high academic standards and selective admissions, Yale University, a prestigious Ivy League institution in New Haven, Connecticut, is among the US universities that accept NECO result.
Also, to apply to Yale, you need to submit your SAT or ACT scores along with your high school transcripts. In addition, Yale requires at least two teacher evaluations, a school report, and a mid-year school report, alongside other standard application materials.
9. Princeton University
I did check the Princeton University website myself. This school is located in Princeton, New Jersey, and is a member of the Ivy League, Princeton University. Yes, Princeton University does accept NECO scores for admission. In fact, this university is more interested in SAT scores, two teacher recommendations, counselor recommendations, and school reports (SR).
