Yonsei University Scholarship for International Students Undergraduate

At Yonsei University, Underwood International College (UIC), the tuition fee for the first semester is 7,678,000 (in KRW which is about $5,800) for international students and 7,064,000 (in KRW which is about $5,300) for Korean students. This might not be a big amount to some, but some students still find it difficult to meet up. In this light, we have the Yonsei University scholarship for international students undergraduate. There are many different scholarships here which we will talk about one by one.

1. Admissions Scholarship

First, we have what is known as admissions scholarship at Yonsei University. This is open to new international students at UIC. This scholarship covers the full tuition for 4 years.

How to Apply

If you are an international student applying to UIC, you’ll automatically be considered for this scholarship. Selection is based on academic performance, and chosen students will be notified in their admission packet. To continue receiving the scholarship each semester, you must maintain a high GPA.

An admission based scholarship takes your GPA seriously. It’s almost like a merit-based scholarship be because both look at your GPA. The only difference is that this admission based one will automatically consider your profile for qualification if it deems it fit. That is, when you apply, the system scans to see if, apart from your GPA, you meet the requirements. Also, only top GPAs are considered for this opportunity.

2. Merit-based Scholarship

We also have the merit Yonsei University scholarship for international students undergraduate. This one is only available to current UIC students.

The scholarships cover full tuition to half or one-third for each semester.

Unlike the admissions scholarship, you have to already be a student. So, if you couldn’t get an admissions scholarship, you can take a second shot at this one. You need good GPA. Merit scholarships are typically very competitive. Lots of brilliant students with good GPAs will be applying for a spot, and that means a lot of high grade points won’t also make it to the approved list.

How to Apply

All UIC students are considered for this scholarship without needing to apply separately. The criteria for the scholarship may vary each semester. For details or to apply, watch for the university’s announcements.

It’s a semester by semester scholarship. If you have been a student already, you’ll be considered the following semester depending on your academic performance. For students who study and work at the same time, it’s going to be a tough one. Perhaps, focusing only on school for now will really help. You can work during semester breaks instead and focus on studies during academic periods.

3. Need-based Scholarship

The third is the need-based scholarship which is open for all current UIC students. As for the benefits, this award can cover full tuition, half, or one-third per semester.

Some students think that need-based scholarships are not as competitive. Well, they are. Most students who think their GPAs are not good enough fall back here. It’s even tougher to get a need-based scholarship because you have to convince the school about your level of finances. You want them to know that you don’t have, and would really appreciate it if your academic expenses are being covered.

The advantage of a need based is that you don’t have to score a high GPA to be considered. But just as much as you need this, some other students also do. Many are going to apply for this opportunity with high grades, and their bank account will tell if they don’t have the funds for studies.

How to Apply

The Freedom Scholarship is announced at the semester’s end for students requiring financial aid. You must submit an application form along with the necessary documents. The UIC office reviews these applications, and you may be invited for an interview with the scholarship committee.

4. Other Scholarship Opportunities

UIC occasionally offers various other scholarship programs. These are not regular but may become available during any semester or academic year. The UIC office will announce these opportunities to all eligible students as they arise.

When you apply for the Yonsei University admission, you will then be considered for any of these scholarships.

Usually, admitted students are eligible for these. So, you have to get in first. Not all of them are full funded. In fact, what you’ll be seeing are small scholarships that cover certain expenses. Some can be withdrawn while some can’t, except until you are done with the program requirements. Some of such scholarships also allow you to combine them with other ones. It all depends on the providers.

Apart from those scholarships that are not based on admission, needs, and merit, you’ll get a fully paid scholarship here in Yonsei University. Others can give you 50%, 60%, 75%, etc. coverage. Still a good bargain, and worth it.
