Does Brandon University Accept NECO Result?

·

Let’s be honest, Canada is one of the best study destinations in the world right now. Here, we have some of the top universities, including Brandon University. However, to study here at this university, you need the required result to get in. So, for this article, I am going to answer the question: does Brandon University accept NECO result? Unfortunately, they don’t. We will get into this and I will reveal the results they actually accept.

How Brandon University Handles Your Documents

All documents you submit to Brandon University become its property. If you are in your last year of high school, you need to include a letter from your principal or an authorized person saying that you’ll complete high school before university starts.

If your transcripts are not in English, a certified translator must translate them. This translator should also state that you got the documents in a sealed envelope. You should send both the original official transcript and the translated version to the Admissions Office.

If you’ve already done some courses at a college or university, your admission can’t just be based on your high school records. So, you will have to include all your higher education information in your application.

Now, let’s get into the main discussion that concerns us.

Does Brandon University accept NECO result?

Unfortunately, Brandon University is not among the international universities that accept NECO results. The Admissions Office works hard to keep the information up-to-date regarding the requirements. When they receive your application, they will send you an email asking for specific documents. These documents include:

  • West African Examinations Certificate (WAEC) and
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE)

Let’s begin with GCE.

1. GCE

If you need admission to Brandon University with GCE, to qualify, you need to have passed 5 different subjects, with at least two subjects at the Advanced level. Another option is to pass 4 different subjects, with at least 3 at the Advanced level. I personally reached out to Brandon University and they informed me about the following that you will need:

  1. Two Advanced Subsidiary level courses can be used in place of one Advanced level course.
  2. Four Advanced Subsidiary Level courses can replace two Advanced Level courses.
  3. One Advanced Subsidiary subject counts the same as one Ordinary level subject.

2. WAEC

If you don’t have NECO, your WAEC is 100% accepted. For WAEC, you need at least 5 subjects with grades C5 or higher, including English and Mathematics. You must buy a scratch card and send all of this information in one email: your name, the serial/PIN, examination number, and the exam date including the year.

3. English Language Proficiency Test Scores

You must send your scores for English language proficiency tests in a sealed envelope from the exam authority. However, for TOEFL, you have the option to submit your scores electronically directly through TOEFL (ETS) if you prefer.

But Why doesn’t Brandon University?

It’s simple. Brandon University, like many other Canadian universities, has specific admission requirements and standards for incoming students. Unfortunately, NECO results are not recognized by Brandon University.

NECO results are not equivalent to the academic qualifications required by Brandon University. The university has concerns about the comparability of NECO results to their own admission requirements.

Now, you also have to look accreditation. Brandon University doesn’t accept NECO due to accreditation issues. The university only accepts qualifications from widely accredited organizatios, of which NECO isn’t. NECO is seen a lot more as a national qualification.

The rejection isn’t about English Language proficiency because NECO tests students in English too. In fact, NECO tests your necessary language skills. However, Brandon already makes up for this using IELTS or TOEFL for English language.

As for international admission standards, we will agree that NECO meets this. In Nigeria, it almost operates like WAEC. Brandon University just has its fears for international admission standards and best practices, which may not recognize NECO. This school prioritizes qualifications from international examination bodies, such as WASSCE. The gooo thing is that Brandon isn’t the only university here in Canada. There are many others that accept NECO. You can see the full list here. In the meantime time, here are 10 of them:

  1. Memorial University of Newfoundland
  2. University of New Brunswick
  3. Mount Allison University
  4. Dalhousie University
  5. British Columbia Institute of Technology
  6. University of Northern British Columbia
  7. University of the Fraser Valley
  8. Kwantlen Polytechnic University
  9. Canadian Mennonite University
  10. University of Calgary

These are all equally good universities, and some of them a lot better than Brandon.

You can even use NECO to work abroad—Yes!

NECO is not a limitation here in Canada. You can use it to work abroad, yes, you heard that. Canada, to be specific, has a lot of jobs that take NECO holders. With a skilled worker visa, you can apply for jobs in fields like accounting, engineering, and technology. And if you’re interested in vocational, you can apply for programs in healthcare, hospitality, and more.

Some Canadian companies are even accepting NECO results for various job positions. Toronto Dominion Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and Bank of Montreal, are some of the companies. So, don’t let anyone tell you that your NECO result is not good enough.

Moreover, the Canadian government is also supporting foreign workers, with programs like the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program. So with the right skills and experience, you can even apply for permanent residency. We have worked with a couple of students who are now in Canada, and they all had NECO. Some of these schools accept GCE NECO in case that’s what you have.

Conclusion—Is NECO Accepted at Brandon University?

So, this is all you need to know about gaining admission into Brandon University as a Nigerian with NECO. So, no, Brandon does not accept NECO but other schools here in Canada do. If you decide to write GCE, it must also be GCE WASSCE result before they can consider you for admission.
